There's nothing like getting a call from your child's teacher saying, "So your daughter has had a little accident at school and I think you need to come pick her up. I'm not sure but she might need to go see a doctor." (and from their personal cell phone to boot!) So Mom abandons her grocery cart and heads to the school but unluckily gets to the train tracks at the same time as the train!
When Mom arrived at the school, one of the gym teachers pulled her aside and confirmed that Emilee would most likely need a few stitches. (Her teacher hadn't been on supervision, so when she called she hadn't seen Emilee's wound and was just going by what others had told her.) Luckily Dad was at home, as Mom had Uncle Mike with her, and a visit to urgent care with the two of them wouldn't have worked so well. Mom packed Emilee into the urgent care building and started to get her checked in when Dad arrived and took over.
Dad brought pups and her Ipad to keep her happy and distracted. The doctor told her that you have five layers of skin and she managed to go through all of the layers but didn't damage anything else. After some freezing and five stitches, she was ready to come home and felt okay.
Emilee had a bit of a rough night as her leg started to hurt once the freezing wore off. The next few days consisted of rest and pain killers. We were told to leave this plasticy bandage on for a few days. We took it off early though as it continued to fill with blood and we wanted to make sure more stitches weren't needed.
It looked pretty good - given that Emilee had run into a stump with a big wood piece sticking out and it ripped her leg open!
Emilee had planned to have a playdate on the Friday as there was no school - because of the Thursday that she had, and how sore her leg was on day two, we had to cancel her plans. She has a pretty great friend though that brought her some fun balloons, crafts, coloring books and treats to keep her entertained over the next few days. Mom also received multiple texts from worried classmates wanting to check up on Emilee. We are so grateful for amazing friends!
We wanted to get Emilee out for some fresh air after she hurt her leg but walking very far was out of the question. So we came up with the next best plan (or so we thought), we put her in our old stroller and took her for a walk! We received a few funny looks but it did the trick.
Added Updates - Emilee's leg continues to heal well. We went for our appointment with the doctor a week after the accident and he agreed with us that it was too early to remove the stitches. We left them in for another 5 days before having them removed. The doctor had to dig a bit for one of the stitches which didn't make Emilee too happy.
Emilee wanted her leg covered up for a long time after because she didn't want people to stare at it. It's scabbed over nicely and Dad read her the riot act if she is caught picking at it. She hasn't touched it at all! Way to go Em!
Emilee's scab is working its way off all by itself. We are hoping for not much of a scar as Em has done well at leaving it alone. Mom talked to Emilee about not running in that area of the play ground. Em said, "Yea, I probably won't run there for the next few weeks at least." Mom wanted to clarify, "No Em, like never ever run in that area again, ever." Kids are so much fun!!
